Cracking the Walnut

Muscles_rhomboïdesIf you’ve been to see me and spent any time at all on my table you know I’m constantly harping on how we not only need to stretch muscles, but we also need to strengthen the opposing muscles in order to address and heal the problem. In pursuit of that I have decided to begin a series of self-care articles that will hopefully be helpful to someone.

I’m beginning with Cracking the Walnut because most of us are familiar with the insidious upper back pain that manifests between the shoulder blades. You know what I’m talking about. We’ve all experienced the burning, tingling, sparkling, tightness and/or tiredness between the shoulders that tends to spend weeks or months torturing us before it mysteriously retreats only to return again when we least need or expect it.

Cracking the walnut refers to an exercise I once learned from a Pilates instructor who for several months put me through the unique torture that is called a Body Reformer machine. Her version of cracking the walnut involved me lying on my belly on a big box while holding onto straps and extending my arms straight out to their respective sides as I tried desperately to continue breathing. Eventually I was able to correctly perform this exercise and am glad that I learned it because I attribute it to fixing a host of problems with my upper back and neck.

The good news today is that you don’t need a Body Reformer machine or a Pilates instructor to learn how to crack this walnut. My philosophy for these self-care articles is to give you simple things that you can do with little to no equipment or by using everyday objects and items you already own in the comfort and convenience of your own space.

You simply need to relax and find a place to be. This scapula squeeze strengthener can be done by sitting with your arms loosely held by your sides, head facing forward and aligned over the spine, shoulders down, abs contracted and maintaining a protected, stable, and flat low back. When you’re aligned, gently squeeze the shoulder blades together while keeping the elbows low and at your side. Here’s a short video that illustrates the move.

In most folks, the shoulders start to drift up, a noticeable sway develops in the low back and the chest puffs out. Don’t do this! See the ProTip below to learn how to access the correct muscles and keep your alignment impeccable.

Once you can maintain your alignment through the move, engage and hold for a count of three. Do that 10 times. Observe how you feel before and after each set.

ProTip: If you’re having trouble isolating the rhomboids and middle trapezius muscles, extend both arms straight out to the sides of your body with palms facing forward. Then visualize using your scapula to squeeze out a sponge. Experiment and really pay attention to what it feels like to move and access these muscles.

In the beginning you might get sore from only one set of 10. Remember that these muscles are very seldom engaged in our hunched over a desk, laptop, tablet, and cellphone society. In fact, they are more likely to be in a constant state of stretch which sounds great until the muscles want to go home and rest for a while.

So be kind to yourself, go slow, and work your way up to a stronger set of rhomboids, middle trapezius muscles, and less pain in the upper back.

As always, I’m here with my table if you need me, but I hope you’ll try some of these self-care techniques. Feel better!

Kids and Massage?

Me with Tina Allen founder of Liddle Kidz Foundation
Me with Tina Allen founder of Liddle Kidz Foundation

So during my recent trip to Denver, Colorado and the 2014 AMTA National Convention I had the odd fortune of getting to take a Pediatric Massage class. I say odd fortune because it wasn’t my first choice. It was actually pretty far down the list of my choices, but circumstances happened and I wasn’t able to register until other classes had filled and this class was happening in the time period I had free to take a class.

You know how they say that everything happens for a reason? Well, there was a reason. Apparently I was meant to take this class, Pediatric Massage: Highlighting Trauma.

It was four hours of non-stop information. Stuff that I should have learned in massage school or psychology class or somewhere, but hadn’t. The class should have been two days long for all the information that needed to be conveyed and received. The instructor was vibrant, knowledgeable, and passionate. She was also very focused on research and real science backing up what she was teaching.

Overall a great class. One that leaves you thirsting for much, much more of the subject.

What I learned in her class, by and large, is that the kids I have worked on, mostly in my office, are not just pint-sized adults; which is how I’ve been treating them. They have different needs, different expectations, just a whole different mindset of what massage is or should be.

That being said, I’m not going to stop working on kids. I’m just going to modify with what I know now. And, mark this down, I’m going to go for a Pediatric Massage Therapy Certification. I won’t be able to go until next year, but that gives me time to save up enough money. Donations are welcome, the tuition is expensive and I’ll have to travel to do it, but I think it’s going to be worth it. And I think it’s a service that our area desperately needs.

Anyway, I’m linking a video here of a short (17 minutes) documentary about Liddle Kidz Foundation and what they do for kids, not just in North America, but all over the world. Enjoy!

CVOP – A Funny Word

So recently I was chosen by the AMTA Alabama Chapter to represent Alabama at the 2014 AMTA Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program. The part about Orientation is really funny to me since I’ve been volunteering with the Alabama Chapter for over two years now and am currently holding down a board position as well as chairing their membership committee and website/social media committee. One would assume that I don’t need no stinking orientating, but not true… I learned so much at this conference. About the American Massage Therapy Association and a lot of leadership stuff which sounds dry and boring, but I assure you it was not. I made a boatload of new friends who I hope to see in September at AMTA National Convention. We had field trips during this conference which was nice. Of course, I think if you put a bunch of massage therapists in a room for three days and told them to sit still there would be a riot. We had several planned outings and got to see much of the city of Chicago and Evanston. It’s hard to put into words all the stuff that happened on this trip so basically I’m not even going to try. I’m just going to leave you with some pictures of the highlights of my time there. Enjoy!

Peace y’all!

Harvest Moon @ Spirit of the Roots Festival – August 9th

I’ll be setting up a tent and my portable bars at this music & arts festival in Decatur, AL. I’ll even bring my hula hoops to contribute a little to the performance art part of the festival.

AMTA National Convention – September 15th – 21st

Once again I’ll be serving as an AMTA Alabama State Chapter Delegate. This year’s convention is in Denver, CO and I’ll be spending a few extra days there after the convention is over. There will be a noticeable closure of Harvest Moon Massage during that time period and a resulting shortage of available appointments. So get your September appointments scheduled now! You can use my online scheduler if you like or just shoot me a text message.

And in between all these awesome little activities and events, I’ll be doing lots and lots of massage. Hope to see you on my table soon!

National Thank A Police Officer Day

Thank an officer2I was contacted recently by a friend asking me to sponsor a food tray for Decatur Police Department. Seems it’s National Thank a Police Officer Day and they want to say, “Thank You!” by making sure that all three shifts are covered for their meals while at work.

Of course I agreed with a big, old donation and some brochures.

I’ve always been an avid supporter of the police. Whatever your opinions on the police, we really don’t want to live in a world without them. Police officers are important and they do a very difficult job. Most never make the news and silently fight the demons they collect while on the job.

And while I’m thankful for all those things that our officers do every day in the line of duty, there’s one officer out there who holds a very special place in my heart. I don’t know his name, but I remember him like he was standing in front of me right now.

I was six and sporting a big, old bandage and brace on my right foot and ankle. The ankle was stitched up from a fall on some glass and I was on crutches. My mom and I had been out on post to do some business and as we were leaving the car started smoking real bad. She pulled over, looked at me and said, “Stay in the car.” Then she disappeared.

The car continued to smoke and continued to smoke and continued to smoke and even at six I was getting worried and trying to figure out how to get out of the car without getting in trouble. I wasn’t really one to disobey much, I was scared of the whoopin’.

Suddenly the door flew open and this big MP reached in and grabbed me out of the car. I remember the way his arms squeezed me as he ran away from the car.

It left an impression.

Now, to be honest the car was never actually on fire. It was a bad overheating situation, but he didn’t know that. He saw a lot of smoke, thought the car was on fire, and saw a distressed kid in the car. He did what anyone would do and what just happened to be his job. He made a friend for life and has always been a good cop ambassador to me.

I share this story with a lot of people and now here because the police get so much bad press and even though I’m one voice I think it’s important to realize that these folks are our everyday heroes and we need to start appreciating them as such. They do a hard job. One that most of us couldn’t handle.

So, THANK YOU, to all our officers out there. And thanks to My Special MP.

What is Rossiter Bodywork?

Rossiter
Kathy Howard, Rossiter Instructor Extraordinaire, teaching a low back pain relief technique

Boiled down to its simplest form, Rossiter is a method to reduce pain.

Did you know that most people schedule their very first massage to reduce pain? They take a leap of faith and hope that the therapist they chose randomly from the phone book or Google search will know all the right moves to make their pain go away. This is why I do Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy. It’s my go-to method for getting into the areas that need to get loose in order to relieve pain.

Sometimes it doesn’t work though which, frankly, terrifies me. I hold myself to a terribly high standard when it comes to my clients. Even if I can’t eradicate all vestiges of pain, I at least want you to feel much better when you get off my table. The good news is that I’ve ever only had one client (to date) who got off my table unhappy. Of course, they got on the table with the expectation that I wouldn’t be able to help so, obviously, I didn’t. It was heartbreaking to me, but that is another story altogether.

The bad news is that I have some clients suffering from chronic pain who I have been able to help in the short-run, but after a couple of weeks or a month or two months, they’re hurting again. And while I love each and every one of my clients and I love to see them and I especially love giving them the Ashi goodness, I want to be able to make a more significant difference in their pain. I think Rossiter might be the answer. After spending a weekend learning how to do this technique and practicing on friends, family, and select clientele. I feel ready to start offering a few techniques to my clients and the public.

So What Is Rossiter Exactly?

The creator of this method prefers to call it a Rossiter Workout. And while you, the client or Person In Charge, will be expected to perform guided stretches, it’s not a workout in the classic sense of the word. There’s no running or jumping up and down. Nothing too strenuous really, just some stretches and afterward a bit of walking, but it winds up being hard work.

Rossiter Workouts are performed on the floor or in a chair. As the Person In Charge, you will remain fully clothed and will control all aspects of the workout. Many of the maneuvers demanded in the Rossiter Workout will be uncomfortable. And while I’m not about pain, sometimes you have to walk through the pain in order to get past it and leave it behind. As the therapist or Coach, I will ask you a lot of questions about your pain and customize a workout for you. Then I will teach you the movements we will be doing to relieve your pain. During the workout, I will use my foot or elbow to apply deep compression to the treatment area and guide you through a series of stretches. Periodically during the workout I will ask you to walk or perform some other movement-oriented task to assess the progress you have made in reducing your pain levels.

And that’s it in a nutshell, I help you unwind those pesky fascial restrictions and you regain the freedom of movement and freedom from pain that you crave.

Alzheimer’s / Dementia Caregiver Support

Recently I started attending an Alzheimer’s/Dementia Caregiver Support group. Many of you already know that I help to care for an elder who has severe dementia. We spent several years struggling along by ourselves trying our best to provide the support she needs as her dementia continues to escalate.

Then last year a friend turned me on to these meetings at the Morgan County Mental Health Association. They are for caregivers and family members of people who suffer with Alzheimer’s and other dementias and I can’t say enough about how helpful this program and the people who run it have been. Whether you need advice on services available in the community to help you and your loved one cope with the frightening changes they’re experiencing or you just need a break and to sit and talk with someone who understands they seem to know and be available for you.

I didn’t get to attend the last meeting which is a shame because they hosted a local specialist on Elder Law. That would have been helpful. Maybe next month I can get a synopsis of what we should be doing and looking at.

Anyway, if you’re local to Morgan County, Alabama and struggling with Alzheimer’s and/or dementias in your family, this meeting is free and open to the community.

When: 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7 – 8:30 pm

Where: 207 Commerce Circle SW, Decatur, AL

More info: Morgan County Mental Health Association
