Happy Anniversary, Harvest Moon Massage Therapy!

Alabama Massage Therapy License, Harvest Moon Massage TherapyIt was just eight short years ago (technically August 22nd) when I finally became licensed in the State of Alabama!

Who knew way back then that it would take almost eight years to become a full-time massage therapist? Not me, but I don’t regret a minute of it. I love being a massage therapist and helping people get out of pain!

I am honored at how so many seek me out and trust me to help eliminate their pain and stress and then send their friends and family.

I’m sending out the biggest, “Thank You,” to my clients, family, and friends who have helped make this dream come true.

When I think about being a massage therapist two things from my past repeatedly come to mind. First, how my high school classmates decided that I, their class Valedictorian, would be most likely to become a beach comber. Some day I will do massage on a beautiful beach with the waves crashing in the background. Under my table will be the most impressive array of found objects, shells and driftwood. Imagine the photo opportunities!

And second, this quote from Louisa May Alcott that I chose to appear next to my senior yearbook photo, “Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.” I’m so glad I followed and I’m so, so glad I reached this aspiration.

Thank You For Your Support!

How to Get a Massage Therapy License in the State of Alabama

Alabama Massage Therapy LicenseThe process for obtaining a Massage Therapist License in the State of Alabama has changed since this post was published, please see the new post dealing with massage therapy licensing in Alabama. How to Get a Massage Therapist License – Digital Edition!

This question seems to be coming up more and more lately so I thought I would put together what I hope is a helpful guide to getting your massage license in the state of Alabama.

For Graduates of Alabama Massage Therapy Schools

For recent graduates the process is quite straightforward, you must receive your diploma or certificate, take and pass a national exam, purchase liability insurance, and then apply for a state license. Numerous documents proving your credentials will be required. Those are spelled out in the application itself.

Your instructors and administrators from massage school should be a great help in getting your application package ready.

For Massage Therapists Moving to Alabama

For massage therapists moving to Alabama who wish to become licensed the process may be a bit less straightforward, especially if you have been a therapist for a long time, the state you’re moving from doesn’t require licensure, and/or you never took a national examination.

If you currently hold a license in another state and you took the NCTM(B) or MBLEx exam and passed then you should request an application for a license, fill it out and submit it. Unless you have a significant difference in educational hours, I suspect your application will go through pretty easily. In the case of a large difference in educational hours, I recommend documenting all your continuing education along with associated hours to send with your application.

If you’re reading this article because you have been a therapist for a number of years, you don’t have a license from your current state, and/or you never took the NCTM(B) or MBLEx, let me put your mind at ease right away. It is possible and you probably won’t have to take the national exam to get your license here.

According to the Code of Alabama, Title 34. Professions and Businesses, Chapter 43. Massage Therapists, § 34-43-9. Application for license; educational requirements, paragraph b,

(b) Notwithstanding the requirements in subdivisions (1) and (2) of subsection (a), the board may license an applicant if the applicant is licensed or registered in another state, which, in the opinion of the board, has standards of practice or licensure that are equal to or stricter than the requirements imposed by this chapter.

So that’s good news! Yay! Take a deep breath and know you can do this.

Now let’s get down to the business of how to go about getting licensed if you are transferring from a state where you weren’t required the minimum educational hours, you didn’t have a license, or you’ve been a therapist for fifteen or twenty years and never took a national exam.

Here’s a jumping off point for getting started with this process:

  1. Request an application for an Alabama massage therapy license
  2. When it arrives, fill it out as best you can
  3. Provide as much of the required documentation as you can
  4. Include a copy of your liability insurance
  5. Include a copy of any licenses or registrations you hold in the state you are moving away from*
  6. Include a copy of your resume or a letter outlining your qualifications, work experience, and total number of hours of initial education and continuing education you have completed

*If you don’t have a license or registration because the state you’re moving from doesn’t require or provide it, I recommend doing a very thorough job of providing documentation on your initial education including hours required, years worked as a practicing massage therapist, and a list of all the continuing education including hours earned for each. A couple of references from massage school instructors and peers also would not hurt in this case.

At this point you may be thinking I am making this sound easy in a somewhat terrifying sort of way. It is actually just a process. And while it seems like a lot all at once, by working through the process a step at a time and being organized, we can reduce a difficult, frustrating and, let’s face it, scary proposition to a somewhat less stressful situation.

So let’s all take a deep breath and get ready to work this process. More than likely it’s going to take several days (maybe weeks) to get all the documentation and information together to apply for your Alabama massage therapy license. Use the list above as a starting place and add to it as you think of specific documents you want to include in your application package. And then every day try to tick one thing off the list. Pretty soon your package will be ready to put in the mail and hopefully you haven’t pulled all your hair out.

After mailing your application, wait a few days then call the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy. They may or may not be able to confirm that your application has arrived. Regardless, have a conversation with the person answering the phone and anyone they may transfer you to about your application and what you are trying to do. They should be able to advise you on any further action you might need to take. Add any actions you need to take to your list. Write down that person’s name on your list so if you have to call again you can ask for this person and not have to start all over with someone new.

Expect for your application to be reviewed by the executive director of the board. Someone from the state board may call and ask clarifying questions. You may be asked to provide more information. If so, provide it. Then take a deep breath and get ready to wait. This part of the process could take a while.

I would advise you not to be afraid to call periodically (no more than weekly) to check on the progress of your application’s review process. So many people I talk to are afraid to call the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy and I don’t know why. They are actually all quite friendly and knowledgeable.

I hope this article has been helpful at relieving some of the anxiety involved in getting your Alabama massage therapy license. If you found this helpful or have more questions, let me know down there in the comments and I will do my best to find the answers.

Forms and requirements to apply for an Alabama massage therapy license can be found on the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy website.

***Please note that at the writing of this article 4/2016, there is a statement on the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy Requirements page that says,

The Massage Therapist License requirements are … and be certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

I have confirmed with a representative of the state board that certification (Board Certified) with NCBTMB is not a requirement. This is an unfortunate wording for their requirement to take and pass a national massage therapy examination. Their website is in the process of being updated to reflect that they will accept the MBLEx and delete the language associated with certification by the NCBTMB.

2014 AMTA National Convention – It’s Almost Time!

HOD 2013
Floor of the 2013 AMTA House of Delegates

Many of you may remember that I took off for Ft. Worth last September to serve as an Alabama chapter delegate for American Massage Therapy Association. Well, those delegate positions are two year terms so I’m getting ready to run off to Denver next week.

I know you’re wondering why I do this. After all, I have to leave my lovely clients and the income that they so generously give to me. I do it because of the position statements that AMTA House of Delegates will be voting on this year.

Position statements can affect the entire profession of massage, massage education and consumers of massage. And I think this year’s crop of position statements run the gamut. We’ll be debating and voting on position statements that deal with portability of massage credentials across state lines, how massage affects health and wellness, and whether massage is helpful for the rehabilitation of burn scars.

One would assume that all these are good things and I would agree in principal, but when you’re representing not only a state chapter, but a national organization all the i’s must be dotted and t’s crossed. So these position statements may or may not be adopted. But never fear, there are lots of position statements that have already been adopted. If you’re interested, they’re over here. Leave a message if you have an opinion or observation about the position statements. I’d love to talk with you about them.

Anyway, last minute preparations are under way and I wanted to let you know that Harvest Moon Massage Therapy will close Friday, September 12th @ 3:30pm and will resume normal hours Friday, September 26th. Email and voicemail returns will be very slow during this time period. If you would like to schedule, please use online scheduling through StyleSeat.

Why so long? Because I’ve never been to Colorado before and I’m taking a few days after the convention ends to see the sights and have a walkabout in the mountains. I also hope to experience several sets of Ashi feet on my back while I’m there. Colorado being the home of Ruthie Hardee, the developer of the Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy method I practice, there should be lots of Ashi feet available.

It’s going to be an interesting trip and I’m taking the BIG suitcase this time. TSA may be very surprised when they see how I’m going to stuff a hula hoop and a yoga mat in there. I hope they don’t try to take anything out!

CVOP – A Funny Word

So recently I was chosen by the AMTA Alabama Chapter to represent Alabama at the 2014 AMTA Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program. The part about Orientation is really funny to me since I’ve been volunteering with the Alabama Chapter for over two years now and am currently holding down a board position as well as chairing their membership committee and website/social media committee. One would assume that I don’t need no stinking orientating, but not true… I learned so much at this conference. About the American Massage Therapy Association and a lot of leadership stuff which sounds dry and boring, but I assure you it was not. I made a boatload of new friends who I hope to see in September at AMTA National Convention. We had field trips during this conference which was nice. Of course, I think if you put a bunch of massage therapists in a room for three days and told them to sit still there would be a riot. We had several planned outings and got to see much of the city of Chicago and Evanston. It’s hard to put into words all the stuff that happened on this trip so basically I’m not even going to try. I’m just going to leave you with some pictures of the highlights of my time there. Enjoy!

Peace y’all!

Upcoming Events and Activities at Harvest Moon Massage

It feels like a bunch to me and I’m having trouble keeping it all straight in my head so I thought I would de-mystify this schedule thing. I hope you can make some (or all) of these events!

Therapeutic Partner Massage Class – July 26th @ 4pm

This class has been cancelled. I had several folks express interest, but the date was bad. We’ll look at rescheduling this in the Fall. If you are interested in getting in the next class, please let me know ASAP!

Handspins with Katie Emmitt – July 28th @ 6pm

Kemmitt Hartselle 2014Interested in learning to hula hoop or do some of those fancy hoop dance tricks?  Come on out to Hartselle, AL and meet Katie Emmitt of Emmitt Hoops for this 3-hour workshop on hand spin techniques. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as more experienced hoopers.

Register at Emmitt Hoops or RSVP on Facebook!

Harvest Moon @ Spirit of the Roots Festival – August 9th

I’ll be setting up a tent and my portable bars at this music & arts festival in Decatur, AL. Come on out and get a massage while experiencing some of the best music, performance art and fun available in Decatur! I’ll even bring my hula hoops to contribute a little to the performance art part of the festival.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Brook Hill Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

AMTA National Convention – September 15th – 21st

Once again I’ll be serving as an AMTA Alabama State Chapter Delegate. This year’s convention is in Denver, CO and I’ll be spending a few extra days there after the convention is over. There will be a noticeable closure of Harvest Moon Massage during that time period and a resulting shortage of available appointments. So get your September appointments scheduled now! You can use my online scheduler if you like or just shoot me a text message.

 ♥

And in between all these awesome little activities and events, I’ll be doing lots and lots of massage. Hope to see you on my table soon!
