CVOP – A Funny Word

So recently I was chosen by the AMTA Alabama Chapter to represent Alabama at the 2014 AMTA Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program. The part about Orientation is really funny to me since I’ve been volunteering with the Alabama Chapter for over two years now and am currently holding down a board position as well as chairing their membership committee and website/social media committee. One would assume that I don’t need no stinking orientating, but not true… I learned so much at this conference. About the American Massage Therapy Association and a lot of leadership stuff which sounds dry and boring, but I assure you it was not. I made a boatload of new friends who I hope to see in September at AMTA National Convention. We had field trips during this conference which was nice. Of course, I think if you put a bunch of massage therapists in a room for three days and told them to sit still there would be a riot. We had several planned outings and got to see much of the city of Chicago and Evanston. It’s hard to put into words all the stuff that happened on this trip so basically I’m not even going to try. I’m just going to leave you with some pictures of the highlights of my time there. Enjoy!

Peace y’all!

Upcoming Events and Activities at Harvest Moon Massage

It feels like a bunch to me and I’m having trouble keeping it all straight in my head so I thought I would de-mystify this schedule thing. I hope you can make some (or all) of these events!

Therapeutic Partner Massage Class – July 26th @ 4pm

This class has been cancelled. I had several folks express interest, but the date was bad. We’ll look at rescheduling this in the Fall. If you are interested in getting in the next class, please let me know ASAP!

Handspins with Katie Emmitt – July 28th @ 6pm

Kemmitt Hartselle 2014Interested in learning to hula hoop or do some of those fancy hoop dance tricks?  Come on out to Hartselle, AL and meet Katie Emmitt of Emmitt Hoops for this 3-hour workshop on hand spin techniques. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as more experienced hoopers.

Register at Emmitt Hoops or RSVP on Facebook!

Harvest Moon @ Spirit of the Roots Festival – August 9th

I’ll be setting up a tent and my portable bars at this music & arts festival in Decatur, AL. Come on out and get a massage while experiencing some of the best music, performance art and fun available in Decatur! I’ll even bring my hula hoops to contribute a little to the performance art part of the festival.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Brook Hill Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

AMTA National Convention – September 15th – 21st

Once again I’ll be serving as an AMTA Alabama State Chapter Delegate. This year’s convention is in Denver, CO and I’ll be spending a few extra days there after the convention is over. There will be a noticeable closure of Harvest Moon Massage during that time period and a resulting shortage of available appointments. So get your September appointments scheduled now! You can use my online scheduler if you like or just shoot me a text message.

 ♥

And in between all these awesome little activities and events, I’ll be doing lots and lots of massage. Hope to see you on my table soon!

What to Wear to a Massage

TableI find this question is coming up a lot lately with new clients so I thought I would address it. Ha! Get it, adDRESS it? Okay, corny, I know, but that’s just how I can be sometimes. So you’re here because you want to know what to wear to a massage. I view this as a multi-part question so I’m going to break it down into at least two parts here. First, quite literally what to wear to a massage and the second what to wear during the massage.

So what does one wear to a massage?

Well, that depends on where you’re coming from. Whether it’s work, working out, the pool or puttering around the house, you definitely want to wear clothes. Unless of course you’re already in the spa and they’ve got you robed or wrapped in a sheet. I’m not a spa so if you walk in my door wrapped in a sheet I’m going to look at you funny. Typically my clients come in wearing work clothes or casual street clothes. Sometimes they come in their workout clothes and sometimes even in their pajamas. Some of my later in the day clients bring their pajamas with them so they can be ready for couch surfing when they get home. So to sum it up, wear whatever you want to your massage, just wear something. The more comfortable, the better cause I always find comfy clothes easier to put on after the disappointment of a massage that has just ended.

So what does one wear during a massage?

I get this question a lot and a while back I wrote an article on it. Lately though I’ve noticed that article, while humorous and hopefully answered the on/off debate, did not adequately cover the subject. (Sometimes I just can’t help myself.) Anyway, what I’ve discovered is that sometimes this question is less about what you might or might not be wearing, but how much of you is left exposed during the massage.

I recently had a gentleman call asking a lot of questions. At first I thought maybe he was fishing for those illegal kinds of services I don’t provide, but then I realized he was genuinely concerned about whether he would be lying unclothed and uncovered on the massage table while I worked on him. A few days later I had another similar phone call so I am here to say that you will never be unclothed and fully exposed on my massage table or any reputable massage therapist’s table for that matter.

Different methods are taught at different schools, but I learned to use what we call a drape in the massage business. I use a flat sheet for a drape, some massage therapists use towels or blankets, but I was taught with a sheet (at a minimum). My table is typically dressed with a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and a blanket depending on the weather.

As a new client, I will brief you on how to lay when you get on the table and part of that instruction is to cover yourself with the sheet. I have learned over the years that there are many different interpretations of “cover yourself with the sheet,” but all of those are okay.

During the massage you will be covered with the sheet and I will use my mad draping skills to uncover only those areas that I am working. If I need your leg, I’ll uncover it while protecting your dignity and modesty. If I need your back, I’ll cover your leg and uncover your back. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, until the massage is complete. Thus keeping most of the body covered at any given time. Of course, if you’re hot and need to stick your arms or feet out, that is ok too.

If this all sounds too complicated or scary or if you don’t want to remove any of your clothes during the massage, that’s okay too. Any good massage therapist can work directly through your clothing doing compression massage techniques. Many are even trained in stretching techniques or Thai massage which is typically performed on fully clothed individuals. So there’s yet another slant on this question.

So what do you think? Did I hit all the angles of this subject or have I left anything out? Let me know in the comments and I’ll answer any other questions you might have.

Spring Training

Sharon with Susan Salvo at the 2014 AMTA-AL Spring Convention
Sharon with Susan Salvo at the 2014 AMTA-AL Spring Convention

Well, spring has finally sprung and you know what that means for this chic, more training.

I was lucky enough to get to train this spring with the lovely Susan Salvo and brought home two distinct new methods.

The first is a certificate for TMJ Massage, sometimes called Massage for TMD. I learned some fantastic new moves (including intra-oral) to assist those struggling with TMJ and jaw pain.

The second method is a little different and you know me, not one to shy away from different. My certificate calls it Advanced Neuromuscular Techniques, but recently I’ve seen Susan refer to it as Body Movement Techniques or BMT.

Essentially the techniques involve a lot of movement in the joints to help decompress and loosen joints as well as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. I found the technique to be very effective on my stubborn shoulder and have used it with several clients. So far everyone likes it and seems to be having good progress when paired with other deep tissue techniques.

Here are a few links so you can see a little bit of the technique if you’re interested. And for those of you who visit my table regularly, do you recognize the blanket in the video? 🙂

Or just hit Susan’s YouTube channel and watch random Body Mobilization Technique Videos

Here is a nice photo of Susan demonstrating an intra-oral technique for TMJ Massage.

2014 AMTA-Alabama Spring Convention

"Harvest Moon Massage Therapy"Being an education junkie, I have always been interested in quality, local Continuing Education for massage. And while I’ve never really been a joiner, I found a home with AMTA and our local Alabama chapter.

I have been so taken with the group of folks who are leading the chapter now that I decided to join them last year and ran for a position on the Board of Directors. It’s been almost a year now and due to some resignations on the board I was recently appointed to the 1st Vice President position. It makes me nervous, but at the same time I am happy and a little proud to be helping steer this great, local organization.

The spring convention is less than two weeks away and I’m so excited about it. This year we are hosting Susan Salvo. You can read more about her over here. She recently received a wonderful award from the Massage Therapy community celebrating her lifetime contributions to the profession.

She will be teaching 16 CE hours over the weekend of May 2 through 4. The rates are very affordable. AMTA-AL chapter will also have a free luncheon available on May 3rd during which we will have our annual member meeting and elections. There are several board positions up for election as well as alternate delegate positions open. We will also have a Massage Mingle which is open (and free) to all massage therapists and guests on Saturday evening.

The full schedule and registration information can be found on the AMTA-AL Chapter website.

I hope you can make it!

Relish…

MLD Certificate

I just wanted to take a moment and relish in the accomplishment. I am now a

Certified Holistic Manual Lymph Drainage Therapist

Wondering what that is?

Well, I am now certified to perform MLD in the Vodder Method on adults, children, pregnant women, athletes, and individuals needing pain, palliative care and hospice support.

The list of issues MLD is indicated for is long and growing every day with extensive research being conducted in the field.

The biggie is for relief of edema (swelling), but MLD also offers benefits for a host of other situations that fall under both medical and cosmetic labels. Everything from headaches, sinusitis, and Bell’s palsy to acne, rosacea and anti-aging treatments.

If indicated, I am also certified to bandage and educate clients on self-bandaging techniques as well as measure and fit for prescription and athletic compression garments after MLD results have been achieved.

I’ve put together a page with packages and pricing for MLD because it is different from my standard massage rates.

Call today to discuss whether Manual Lymph Drainage might be right for you.

What Are You Doing Saturday Night?

Pirate GCsWant to go to a party?

I won’t be there, I’ve got that pesky final training and exam for Manual Lymph Drainage, but there’s going to be a band of pirates partying over in Decatur.

The party is actually for a good cause. Our pirate crewe (Crewe O’ Ye Crooked Goat) has nominated the very talented chef Jake Reed (of Albany Bistro) for (Pirate) King of Mardi Gras 2015. The party will be part, party with the Pirates and part silent auction.

Come have your picture made with a real pirate, experience the Crate O’ Shame, grub n’ grog, and bid on some very interesting items. Two of which will be the lovely gift certificates for massage from the Lady of the Harvest Moon aka me!

Details on where and when are over here on Facebook. If you don’t Facebook, leave a comment and I’ll get you more information.

Upcoming Events at Harvest Moon Massage Therapy

List

So I was just looking at my calendar and trying to figure out how to get all of this information out to my public. I figured the easiest way (for me) would be to list it all out for you. You know how I like a good list, so here goes. Hope to see you at some of these events!

February 22nd – Jake for King!

As many of you know I am heavily involved in the Carnegie Carnival as a member of the Crewe O’ Ye Crooked Goat. This year we have nominated the fine and wonderful Jake Reed for next year’s Carnival King. We are sponsoring a fund raiser and silent auction to help Jake win. Come on out and party with the pirates!

February 22nd & 23rd – MLD Certification Finals

Unfortunately I won’t be at the Pirate Party and Fundraiser because I’ll be in Birmingham completing my Manual Lymph Drainage certification course. I am regretting missing the party, but am so excited about finally earning my certification for MLD!

March 1st – Mardi Gras Parade!

Arrrrr… long live Crewe O’ Ye Crooked Goat! If you are anywhere in north Alabama, you really should come see the spectacle! We are defending our first place parade trophy this year and we hear the competition is outdoing themselves. Of course, they haven’t seen our float yet. ARrrrrr!!!

March 14th -16th – AMTA Alabama Board Retreat

Including the word “retreat” is probably the biggest misnomer in history here. It’s really just a two and a half -day long meeting for the Board of Directors to strategize and plan the upcoming year’s activities. Can you say, sore rear end?

March 22nd – Grand Opening Celebration!

The Grand Opening Celebration for our beautiful, new space! We’ll have hors d’ oeuvres and some kind of beverage for you as you see the new place, meet and visit with all our providers. Tiny gifts and maybe even a door prize or two may be involved.

April 5th – Partner Massage Class

The very first Partner Massage Class will be held at Harvest Moon Massage Therapy & Reflexology. RSVP today as space is limited and I expect this class to fill quickly!

So that concludes the list of upcoming activities. In the meantime I’m taking appointments and working to get all the finishing details into the new space. We are still looking for someone to rent our third room. So if you know someone, now would be a great time to let them know we have a lovely space for them to rent. The sooner we get a third, the better.
